Vernon, along with Carson Robison and the band, had recorded this same title for Brunswick in August of 1927 under the moniker of "The Kanawha Singers" (that performance can be heard over at
"HonkingDuck.com"). Four months later, on December 15, they recorded it for Edison Labs with their
clandestinely-installed electric recording equipment - no mention was made on the Diamond Disc label that this was an electric recording. It was released on cylinder as well. The performance is a bit toned down, in fact
the vocal is subdued enough that it doesn't sound that much like Vernon. It is a nice performance, on the whole, with a nice tempo and tight ensemble playing. The disc had been kicked around a bit, but there was enough
life left in the grooves for a clear sample, and after taming the rumble a bit it is a pleasure to hear.
