"Doodle Doo Doo"

by Willie Creager's Orchestra

This mega-hit of 1924, written by Mel Stitzel (played piano with the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, also a co-composer of "Tin Roof Blues") and Art Kassell (who would lead a band in the 30's) was recorded hundreds of times by various orchestras. This is the version released on Gennett in early '24. I haven't been able to find out much about the band, though there is a definite Ben Bernie influence in the brass section. The vocalist (Arthur Fields) is more familiar - he flourished around the World War One period, and drifted into obscurity after that. This particular record was very scratchy to start with, and though I don't claim to be able to work miracles with noise reduction I was able to render this side more listenable.
