The Great Depression was just around the corner when Jack Kaufman recorded this side for the Plaza Records group on January 5 of 1929. The songwriter with the last name of "Carver" is unknown but he wrote a prescient lyric:
pay attention to the last refrain particularly. It is one of Jack's better performances. It is also one of the better-sounding recordings issued on Banner, with no distortion and very nice frequency response. The reeds may or
may not be played by a young Jimmy Dorsey; he was a frequent sideman on Kaufman's "Blue Babies" sides for Edison during this time, and may be playing here too, but he is not credited. The record was in very nice shape, so there
were very few scratches to treat.
