Vernon had recorded "Wreck of the Old Southern 97" for Edison Diamond Disc in mid 1924 - his Victor recording of it was more famous, though it sold briskly for Edison too. Eager to repeat his success, he recorded this 1909-vintage chestnut (words by T. Lawrence Seibert and music by Eddie Newton) for Edison in late 1924. He brings the same charm to this perennial train-wreck folk song as he did to "97". There's a little wear on the louder passages in this particular copy, but that's the only flaw here. (Tim Gracyk has a biography of Dalhart posted, and Robert Morritt has more material, including a Dalhart discography, for further perusal. The song itself was adapted by Joe Hill for the Labor Movement - details can be found at Manfred Helfert's site.) |
