"Lulu Belle"

by Jack Stillman's Orchestra

This unusually hot Edison disc "escaped" from the laboratories in Orange NJ on April 20 of 1926. Written by two Tin Pan Alley greats, Leo Robin (who also co-wrote "Louise" and "Beyond the Blue Horizon") and Richard Myers (who had a long career culminating with "Hold My Hand" in 1950), it was not a huge hit but it was a great tune. Jack Stillman's band recorded for Edison quite a bit during the mid 20s, and this is one of their better sides - they have fun with this one for a little over four minutes. The duelling solos between the trumpet (Charles Harrison) and violin (anonymous) are a highlight of the record. This side was in very nice shape, having been played in its time but on good equipment, and only needed rumble removal along with clicks and pops.
